Trauma Therapy in Hot Springs, AR

Trauma is not only what happened to you — it is what your mind and body still carry because of it. Trauma therapy offers a safe, neutral space to work through those experiences at a pace you set.

Trauma can follow a single event, such as an accident, an assault, or a sudden loss. It can also build over years, through an unsafe relationship, ongoing abuse, or a childhood where safety was never a given. Both are real, and both respond to treatment.

How trauma can show up

Trauma affects people differently, and there is no correct way to respond to it. Some of the more common experiences include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Avoiding people, places, or conversations that recall the event
  • Feeling constantly on guard, startled, or unable to relax
  • Numbness, detachment, or feeling disconnected from yourself
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Sleep disruption, irritability, or difficulty concentrating
  • Shame, guilt, or a persistent belief that you are at fault

The approaches I use

I am an EMDRIA certified therapist, and I draw on three approaches, matched to what you need rather than applied to everyone the same way.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured therapy for trauma and PTSD. Rather than requiring you to talk through the details of what happened at length, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — while you briefly attend to the memory, helping the brain reprocess it so it is stored as something that happened rather than something still happening.

The Flash Technique

The Flash Technique is a brief approach used alongside EMDR to reduce the emotional charge of a disturbing memory. It is designed so that you do not have to recount the memory or stay with it — your attention rests on something positive while the memory is touched only briefly. It is often used early on, to make a memory approachable enough to work with directly.

DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy builds concrete skills in distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. It is particularly useful when emotions feel overwhelming or come on faster than you can manage them.

What to expect

Your first appointment is an intake, where I gather background, discuss a provisional diagnosis, and we agree on the goals of treatment together. You are never required to describe more than you are ready to describe. Trauma work moves at the pace that keeps you steady, and establishing safety and stability comes before processing anything difficult.

Please note that this practice does not provide substance abuse counseling or religious trauma therapy.
